Garage Sale Finds - 7.12.14

I love going to garage sales. I went with my mom a bunch this summer. Here's what I found on one of those weekends:

-2 galvanized tins - 50 cents each
-dry shampoo - free (I think the girl having the sale was my high school classmate)
-champagne gold American Apparel bike shorts - $1
-East Coast nautical maps - $1
-metal/glass terrarium - $15… it was actually from a business sale, hence the higher price.

I got this antique pie safe at the same sale. It's a beast. We don't need to talk about the price on this one...

I have yet to refurbish it. It's currently sitting outside dodging hurricanes. Literally. Eek!

This is me, in my car, trying to get it home (on Maui). The pie safe fit like a glove. Look how close it is to my head as I sat in the driver's seat!

In Hawaii, we Upcycle Ukuleles

Ok. Honestly, I'm the only one that I know of who has upcycled an ukulele in Hawaii.
Or anywhere, for that matter.

You see, one day Kit came home with a  a really nice ukulele.

That's great and all, but Ivy is 3 and just wanted to bang that thing!
She really needed a junk ukulele that she could go to town on.

I found this gem at a garage sale. The ukulele, not Ivy.
Yes, that's a Super Why sticker on it. It's covering a hole. These things are a dime a dozen at every ABC Store.

Don't forget the Thomas the Train sticker on the back.

I covered the knobs in tape, and kilzed it. (See the hole?)

A little paint, modge podge and some fabric, and oila!

It sounds terrible, but she can drop it, bang it, or pretend to be a Hawaiian pop star and no one can scold her. :)

Aloha, Rebecca

Little Red Rocking Chair, Part 2

Remember that little red rocking chair I told you about here

Well it finally sold this week! I'm pretty stoked on the sale. You see, it's been sitting on craigslist for 2 months. I knew it would take that perfect person to find it and buy it. It was a little too expensive for your average parent to just make time in their busy schedule to call someone up and buy a vintage chair for their own child. It was also too expensive for someone to buy as a birthday gift for a friend's kid or something. So what eventually happened was perfect. I got a call from a grandmother in New Mexico. Her daughter lived near me and just had a second baby. She wanted her granddaughter to be able to rock her new baby brother. She asked if I would be willing to deliver it since they just had the new baby and all. She sent the check and we're coordinating delivery now. Isn't that so sweet?!
I can't believe it went from this wobbly state:

to this broken down state:

to this put-together state:

I hope the little girl enjoys it!

Ivy is a little heart broken that it's gone, even though I told her from the beginning that we weren't keeping it. I'll admit, I'm gonna miss it a little too, but I'm stoked to be able to move on to the next project.

Aloha,
Rebecca

Black Wicker Chair - before and after

For $1.00 at a garage sale, I couldn't pass up this chair.

Even if it had 5 cocoons attached to the underside.

Armed with my tools, I got to work.

When I took all the upholstery off the bottom cushion, I found this tag. It references dates from the 1920s, but that's all I know.

Chair: $1.00 at a garage sale

Kilz Primer: already had some
3 cans of black satin spray paint: $15
Grey fabric: $20
Hours of work: 6
Total Cost to Refurbish: $36.00 + 6 hours of work

If you're local, she's for sale for $65 on craigslist. Click here

Garage Sale Finds 8-17-13

It's a new season here for me.

On Monday our Fall semester starts at work, which means summer is over and I more or less have a set schedule between now and December. For the first time in 8 years, I will have Saturdays off! I'll be working Mondays now (yuck), but my free Saturdays mean one thing to me: GARAGE SALES!!!!! I'm elated. Here's what I found today:

1. Urban Outfitters duvet cover and 2 standard shams. This was literally in my shopping cart at UO.com before it went out of stock! $30

2. Bamboo terry cloth fabric and some cat fabric. $4 (I talked her down).

3. Twin sheet for Ivy's bed. $2

4. 3 tins with cute spots for labels. $.50 each

5. Kitchen twine. $.25

6. Ukulele. Terrible condition. $.50. wait until I'm done with it. :)

7. Clothespins. $1.00

8. Metal clamps. 4 for $1.00. He had tons more and as I was driving away, I wish I bought all of them. Regret of the day.

If I had a garage to cater to my hoarding, I would have bought these things as well:
I'm in love with this vintage desk. It was only $50. It just was extremely heavy and I didn't like how they put those wheels with wood on the bottom. That's how I talked myself out of it. I want to go back and get it.

Garage organization/work table. -$45.
We have no room for this. One day.

Till next weekend...

Aloha, Rebecca
