Statements - Whimsical Gifts & Decor - Arkansas

On my trip to Arkansas earlier this month, I stumbled into this spunky shop called Statements.

After perusing every square inch of the shop for a good 15 minutes, I finally pulled my eyes away from all the eye-candy, and introduced myself to Allison, the woman behind Statements. She is just a doll. I could have talked to her for hours. She's lived in Conway for 13 years and before owning her own shop she was a buyer. She has a clear vision for Statements service of home decor products, and I think it can be summed up in the following quote from her:

"A lot of people are scared of color and I think when you come in here, you'll see that really all colors go together just fine. There's nothing to be afraid of. What could you possibly do to mess it up?"

This was the first product to catch my eye when I walked in. Paper place mats! Gorgeous patterns to choose from. 

Kit and I both had clock envy for all of these.

The industrial baskets on the left are totally what I'm into right now. 

And I couldn't NOT get a photo of this scalloped lamp shade.

This cart is something I would want in my house, ASAP. I'd be pushing that cart to and from the washer and dryer like it was nobody's business. What's better than silver and orange? Industrial perfection, is what I call it.

The ornaments and pom pom garland are so colorful and whimsical.

Allison is constantly on the lookout for new trends. 

In our conversation about Christmas Tree decor, she said, 

"I broke up with 'deco-mesh' about 4 years ago. I wanted to come up with something different and attainable." 

And take a look at what she found: Deco Flex Tubing. I've never seen anything like it! The neon colors are so fun, and look down below how she uses it on neon trees! Much brighter and cheerier than deco mesh.

In the words of Allison, "It's always fun to have a yellow tree."

 Clearly she has such a great eye for color. There's literally something for everyone in this shop.

I absolutely love the way she displays her products. That bed is just too fun.

Of course Allison addressed the issue that all DIY-ers and home decor guru's face:
"There's a few people who would say, 'Oh, I could make that.' 
I always say to them, 'Giddy-up, send me a picture when you do.'"

I think that's the best use of "giddy-up" I've ever heard.

Tutorial: Kids Chair Cushion

Here's what I did on my day off: Kids chair cushions! 4 of them. 

Here's the adorable fabric up close:

Those chairs (and the matching table) got a huge makeover. More on that in another post. 

Here's my template. Yes, that's Sonya Tayeh. No, I don't think she's a genius, (I know, disagree all you want), she was just on the back of my magazine which I used to make my "pattern." I just traced half of my chair seat, a little larger than the actual seat. The top edge is actually the "fold" of the fabric. You need two folded pieces to make the cushion. 

Here's what one cushion looks like (sideways) cut out. I used XL rick-rack (one of my favorite things right now) as the cushion holders. 

Place the two fabric pieces together (wrong side out).

Sew 3 of the four sides together. Don't sew the side where the cushion holders are going to go.

Because the rick rack was the huge kind, I needed 4 yards of it. Each cushion used two 18" pieces. 

I love these two colors. I couldn't choose just one... so I didn't.

I set the cushion on the chair and put the rick rack right where I wanted it on the chair. I put it inside, then sewed almost the whole side together, leaving a 4" section open so I could turn it inside out. 

Here's what it looked like:

Then I stitched a cross in the center to give it depth when I put the filling in. 

Filled it up...

I sewed the whole side together, not just the section that was open. Then I also sewed the rick rack together because I felt like it pulled the cushion to close to the back of the chair the way it was. 

Ivy's dressed it up with her Easter necklaces. :)

And those are the cushions. :) Details on the painting of the chairs will come later.

It's in the mail...

A few weeks back, my husband's mom requested a custom order of bunting 

(which you can do on my Etsy page!) 

Here was her request: 

-circular

-army green (I translated that to mean "olive")

-peach

Well, I had no olive and all the peach I had had some blue with it. Needless to say, I started collecting. Here's what transpired:

I work EVERY SATURDAY, with the exception of maybe 4-5 Saturdays a year. I was able to go to my first garage sale in ages on New Years Eve. I didn't expect much, since it was a holiday, but I ran across this AWESOME sale with a ton of old napkins. I cut this one up and showcased the adorable flower in the corner: 

 I love the Hawaiiana feel of this green fabric. It's like a quilt.

Little does she know, but I actually bought this whimsical fabric with the trees and snails and birds for Cailin! Then I realized it had olive and peach in it... so I could use it for mom's project too. :)

This adorable strawberry vine vintage fabric is another garage sale find from a garage sale I was able to go to on my last Saturday off, back in August. I love the colors!

And I've been using this pink/white one in the middle for tons of projects. It's a little thin, but still awesome. It's actually from this old women's nightgown from the 70s.... The nightgown is literally getting shorter and shorter as I cut piece after piece off of it.

I'm pretty stoked on this project, and can't wait for my mother-in-law to get it!
