Home Tour - 1914 Bungalow

We had the chance to visit my brother and his wife in Oklahoma over Thanksgiving. They just bought their first home this year, and it was so fun to see what they had done with it. The house was built in 1914, but was recently remodeled, so they weren't dealing with gutting an older home and starting from scratch. The previous owners had really prepped the place well.
Who doesn't love a ladder bookcase? Or a globe? Or a mid-century ottoman? Or a green velvet arm chair?

Let's zoom in on the upper right photo and gaze at that gorgeous avocado train case on the perfect industrial cart.
And yes, that projector screen up above is vintage.

When my bro and sis-in-law were on sabbatical in Maui a few years ago, my sis-in-law started picking up furniture off craigslist, giving it a fresh paint/decor job, and reselling it. This hutch defines her style perfectly, down to the pyrex inside. She's kind of the one who got me into refurbishing furniture. I used to attempt it as a kid, (this one garage sale side table comes to mind, on which I spray painted green and pink flowers...not pretty). I had a lot of learning to do.

This piece is adorable. Radiator metal sheeting with kelly green.

My sis-in-law is also the one who introduced me to bunting! It was not at all a "thing" in Hawaii (and still really isn't). I love it and give it as a gift for every baby shower and house-warming party! Here's her mini-bunting hanging in a vintage window! I love it because all the fabrics have a little memory attached to them, as to where and when she used them.

Here's their living room and gallery wall. Speaks for itself!

Again, swoon over the mini bunting. :)

It wouldn't be Oklahoma without a little ode to the U.S. of A.

This little Christmas tree was in the room we stayed in, and when we were leaving I realized the "ornaments" were costume jewelry pieces. How clever! I'm also in love with that emerald glassware. There was more of it in the kitchen window (see below)

Get ready for a bath tub that you've only seen in your dreams...

Isn't it gorgeous? The previous owners had it installed.

The outside is just as cute. I love looking over the fence to the neighbors' house. It's very whimsical!

Backyard. I envy their screened in porch.

Yellow table and chairs!!

Pops of distressed red!
Back inside to finish the tour, more red accents. Love the empty red frame.

My brother said they had other plans for these chairs, but they ended up like this. Looks good to me!
When I asked him to give me a few words to describe their home style (btw- they both participate equally in the decorating), he called it a "doing-what-we-can-with-what-we-got" style. He then brainstormed the following descriptive words:

*repurposed
*upcycled
*thrifty
*garage sale
*craigslist
*semi-vintage
*semi-mod
*semi-antique
*cheap-chic

And here's the family all together for the first time in quite a few years, on their front porch:

Thanks to my brother and his wife (on the left) for letting us into their home! Both literally, and figuratively.

Aloha, Rebecca

Home Tour - The OTHER Hawaiian Plantation House

You may remember my post from a little over a year ago showing off my brother-and-sister-in-law's plantation house here in Hawaii... (click here to read that post and see pics of their gorgeous home.) Well last weekend I flew over to their neck of the woods and participated in a trunk show, hosted by my amazing sister-in-law. It was my first trunk show ever, and the environment was awesome. It was mostly ladies I know who are just so creative and sweet and sell the coolest products. Everyone basically invited people they knew, so the clientele was friendly and fun. I made more $$ than I anticipated and just had a good time all around.

The trunk show was actually held in their OTHER plantation house a few minutes from where they live. It's a 3 bedroom 3 bath vacation rental, and they blocked it off for the weekend of the trunk show. Like the house from my other post, my sis has decorated this house in her flawless, effortless style. The pictures do all the talking. So without further ado, enjoy this Hawaiian Plantation House Home Tour.

Who still uses these? There are two in this house!

Kilauea Lighthouse artwork by Nick Kuchar of "Everything Is Jake."
I just checked out his Etsy Shop, and he's got some great prints in there!!!

That adorable little table isn't normally in front of the armoire, but we were already in Trunk Show remodel mode when I started taking pics. Haha-- I just noticed a gecko on the wall in upper center of the next pic. Welcome to Hawaii!

Here's where we got to stay for one of the nights we were there:

Isn't this house amazing? The front of the house has a great "parlor" area, with this swing. That was my section for the trunk show. My 50" bunting fit perfectly across it.

Here's some more of my booth:

I'm so glad I went over for this and am also glad I got to share these shots of their house. If you're interested in renting this house out for your next Hawaiian vacation, or just want to see some professional photos, visit their website: www.naholokai.com. If you want to see more shots from the Trunk Show, head over to Ivy & Co on Facebook, or click this link: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.737482286267290.1073741837.718771341471718&type=1&l=72e2c77929

Have a great weekend!

Ivy's Green and Blue Room Tour

We live in a tiny cottage that used to be one of my parents' Vacation Rental units here in Hawaii. Even though it's small, I love making it into a fun little home for Kit, Ivy and I. Especially for Ivy. Let me take you on a "tour" of her green and blue room.

First of all, all of the dark blue furniture was mine. My dad built me this bed when I turned 15. I got to design it when I finally had permission to stop sleeping in my canopy princess bed I'd had since I was 3. :) When I was 21 and moved home after college and living abroad, I painted it blue, and added the dark blue side table and bookshelf, which my dad also built for me. I was so excited when Ivy transitioned out of the crib, so I could let her sleep in my old bed. I like that kind of thing.

This mobile hangs above her bed. It's made out of a 3-prong metal plant hanger. I made it when we moved into this house when Ivy was 6 months old. The butterflies were a gift a student gave me, and Cailin had tied that blue ribbon around our dog Godiva's neck when we brought Ivy home from the hospital. Such a special moment.
I made the bunting in the window, as well as that heart garland (click here to see that post). Kit made the "Kulia" plaque (that's Ivy's middle name, meaning 'fortunate').

The doll on Ivy's bed is named "Amy" and she's 29 years old.
My late aunt Sara made her for me when I was born.
I wore her dress home from the hospital.
On the right is a little side table. I got it at a garage sale 7 years ago.
Sitting on the table is a fabric bucket I made, in the same fabric as her chair cushions. It contains some of the only pink decor in the entire room...! I have nothing against pink, but the child is named "Ivy." I think it's only appropriate that her room match her namesake, at least a little. We are also super into the ocean, so I think she should be surrounded by blue too. There will be plenty of time for tons of pink and purple things in her life. :)
The fabric bucket also matches this hat box I recovered the other day, which now holds her Barbie's. Tutorial on that coming soon. :) For other fabric bucket tutorials and posts, click here, here and here.

If you've been following me for a while, you will recognize the Kids' Pottery Barn table and chair re-do. There's 4 chairs in the set, but I keep one next door at my parent's house. Ivy's room is just too small! For the full post on this re-do, click here. It holds her coffee maker and tea set. The placemat is from Cailin... Urban Outfitters! (I have it in orange, too.) The rug is also from UO. I made the chair cushions. Click here for that post.

Like any good room designed in 2009 or later, Ivy's got a gallery wall. It contains the letters of her name (of course), torn out pages from a vintage book (of course), maternity shots of Ivy in my tummy (of course) and family photos (of course). PS: the fabric in the long frame is one of my absolute favorite fabrics of all time.
 Photos are by:
Sears (the family portrait down below that looks like we're from the 1970's)

I LOVE this picture/book page/illustration:

Here' the view looking "out" of Ivy's room. I use shoe storage on the back of her door to give a home to random toys.
And of course, the bunting. My reason for starting this blog. I love to make bunting. Want some? Give me a color scheme, style and length and we can do a transaction via my Etsy shop.
Oh, and these awesome floor-length curtains are from Pier 1. I LOVE them. They're kind of the reason I did this room tour. I felt like her room was finished once they were up.

Thanks for taking the tour!
Aloha, Rebecca
